Details:

Whippersnapper is seeking applications from emerging artists/collectives for PEERS!

PEERS is a 6-month horizontal mentorship for emerging artists/collectives looking to build their skills in creating consent-based, ethical and rigorous community engaged and public art projects. The first 3 months PEERS are guided through 6 bi-monthly workshops, each session led by a different artist-facilitator, collective or grassroots group. The following 3 months, we will support the PEERS in experimenting with new approaches to facilitation in their, and our local communities. Examples of approaches may include: a series of interviews, writing exchanges, phone calls, movement workshops, community group, reading group, curatorial research. There is no required product or output from PEERS but rather the goal is to add a facilitation method to your tool box, and/or initiate a collaborative dimension to your practice. We will also document the approaches to be shared via a public platform at the culmination of the mentorship program.

This opportunity includes:

  • 6 peer-to-peer workshops

  • 1-1 advisory sessions

  • Paid facilitation in your chosen group/community

Artist Fee:

Whippersnapper will be paying artists/collectives $2,200 - $3,000 (depending on the number of collective members)

*All fees are determined in accordance with CARFAC remuneration fee schedule 2023

Frequently Asked Questions:

  1. Q: Do we have to be based in Toronto to be eligible?
A: We are currently limiting to proposals from artists and collectives based in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area. We want to ensure that we have the proper supports and resources in place for in-person community engagement outcomes. We hope that we can expand the project in the future to widen our geographical scope!

Application Questions:

Please answer the following questions briefly. We understand that your ideas are still in development, but we are looking to get a general sense of what you’re doing:

  1. Briefly describe your practice and interests as they relate to facilitation.

  2. Who are you looking to engage in your research for the project, and why?

  3. What types of facilitation are you interested in experimenting with?

  4. Please share how this peer mentorship will impact the development of your practice.

  5. If you could receive mentorship from anyone who would it be? What will you hope to learn from them?

This project would not be possible without the generous support of Canada Council for the Arts, Sector Innovation and Development grant.
