Il était une fois l’Orient, 2013-2015, est la juxtaposition d’images stéréotypées d’un Orient fantasmé. Ces images concernent la représentation des femmes arabes ou dites “orientales”. C’est un retour sur le cinéma égyptien de l’âge d’or et un modeste essai sur la place qu’occupait la femme dans ce cinéma et l’image que l’Occident lui a attribué dans sa représentation.

À propos de l’artiste :
Nadia Seboussi est une artiste montréalaise d’origine algérienne, elle est titulaire d’un ingéniorat en électronique et a travaillé dans la presse écrite francophone algérienne -rubrique culturelle – avant d’immigrer au Canada. Ayant une pratique autodidacte en art plastique, elle entreprend des études en arts visuels et médiatiques à l’Université du Québec à Montréal et finalise un Baccalauréat en 2009 puis une maîtrise en 2012. Elle a été lauréate de plusieurs bourses et prix d’excellence dont la bourse d’excellence Pierre Ayot en arts visuels et la bourse d’excellence Jacques de Tonnancour pour l’ensemble du parcours académique. Le prix Féminin de la relève, décerné au festival de vidéo à Montréal, Prix GIV, Prix StudioXX et Bourse d’excellence des cadres de l’UQÀM, Bourse d’excellence Autodesk. Elle est la récipiendaire de la bourse Claudine et Stephen Bronfman en art contemporain 2013-2015. Elle a été choisie en 2013 par la faculté des arts pour la médaille d’or du gouverneur général. Elle a participé en 2014 à la Biennale internationale de l’image en mouvement à Buenos Aires en Argentine et son travail a été exposé en France, à Madrid, à Cuba, à Montréal, au Mexique. Elle signe en tant que commissaire Un panorama de la production vidéo des artistes contemporains de l’Algérie et de sa diaspora, 2001-2015, qui sera présenté conjointement à Dazibao en mars 2015 et à la Biennale de Buenos Aires en novembre 2016. Elle occupe le poste de chargé de cours à l’UQAM.

Il était une fois l’orient, 2013-2015, is the juxtaposition of stereotyped images of a fantasized orient. These images involve the representation of arabic or “oriental” women. It is a look back at the golden age of Egyptian cinema and a modest attempt at examining the place of the woman in this era and in the western imagery.
In co-presentation with Le Labo, WhipperSnapper Gallery, with the support of the Canada Council for the Arts.
About the artist:
Nadia Seboussi is a Montreal-based artist of Algerian origin. She holds an electronics engineering diploma and worked for the Algerian Francophone newspaper in the culture section before immigrating to Canada. Being a self-taught visual artist, she undertook studies in Visual and Media Arts at the University of Quebec in Montreal and a complete a Bachelor in 2009 and a master’s degree in 2012. She has been the recipient of several scholarships and awards including Pierre Ayot Excellence Award in Visual and the merit scholarship Jacques Tonnancour for her academic career accomplishments. Other awards include the emerging Female price at the video festival in Montreal, GIV Price, StudioXX Prize and Fellowship for excellence at the UQÀM, Autodesk Excellence Scholarship. She is the recipient of the Claudine and Stephen Bronfman Fellowship in Contemporary Art 2013-2015. She was chosen in 2013 by the Faculty of Arts for the gold medal of the Governor General price. In 2014 she participated in the International Biennial of the Moving Image in Buenos Aires, Argentina and her work has been exhibited in France, Madrid, Cuba, Montreal, Mexico. She curated A panorama of video production of contemporary artists of Algeria and its Diaspora, 2001-2015, to be presented both at Dazibao in March 2015 and at the Biennial of Buenos Aires in November 2016. She is a lecturer at the University of Quebec in Montreal, UQAM.
