Monday, 07 September 2009

LNB - EPISODE #1 from Late Night in the Bedroom on Vimeo.

On August 26th, Late Night in the Bedroom, Toronto's brand-spanking new arts and culture talk show premiered in front of a live audience with a wildly exciting lineup of guests. The show's guests included the extremely prolific hip-hop photographer Che Kothari, who talked about his work as well as Toronto's Manifesto Festival, which he helped found and currently directs. Guerilla gardeners Sean Martindale and Eric Cheung, otherwise known as the "Poster Pocket Plant Guys", discussed their delightful street interventions. Finally, musical guest Boys Who Say No, graced Late Night in the Bedroom's apartment studio with a set of their quirky and unpredictable indie pop rock.

No country for cream and brown tiles.

Fans of the "dance only on the brown squares" game are shedding a tear city wide. Whippersnapper has done some renovations to give us a decidedly more pimped out look. While some patrons may have formed a kitch attachment to our hideous 1950's kitchenesque flooring, we decided to get rid of it so that people may raise an eyebrow, not turn a nose when they enter our beloved whippersnapper. Our brains spent three toxic paint fume addled days cleaning and painting the distressed floor. While we were at it, we decided to top it off with a beautiful new portable wall that can glide across our brand new high gloss floors. ImageImageImageImageImageCome check it out.

Join us in 'the Drawing Room'
Thursday, 24 April 2008
ImageSocial Networking is really cool. Like- really really cool. Like- half a billion dollars cool. Like- 69 million people cool. Since it is certainly true that WhipperSnapper=cool and Social Networking=cool, WhipperSnapper=Social Networking?

WhipperSnapper has developed a social networking site through Ning. Ning allows you to build a plug and play network with lots of functionality and none of the development cost. Amazing. We've called our network 'the Drawing Room'. We're hoping that it can become a more localized space for conversation and interaction within the Toronto arts community. Right now we're invite only, so email us istoica[at]whippersnapper.ca for an invite, or leave a comment with your email address.

SnapBack - the pilot
Thursday, 24 April 2008
SnapBack is a video commenting tool. As it exists right now, it's a touch screen interface that prompts you with a question, video records your answer and then automatically uploads to YouTube with specific tags. This tool was developed by Radek Zajkowski, and we tested it out at the 24 hour 'Sleep is for Dead People' last week. Overall it was quite successful, people used it and (at least to our faces) said nice things. At the moment the tool only allows for one question but moving forward we hope to implement a version with multiple questions and eventually extend the interface to support artist's statements and video tours of each show. The idea is that the artist could record short clips about each piece in order which gallery attendees could then watch on their iPods as they tour the gallery. Ideally SnapBack will be an intelligent feedback and learning tool that will help WhipperSnapper to become a more interactive community space. What we don't want is to create a tool that facilitates a video version of bad event photography, rude comments, drunk yelling and indecent exposure. And luckily, we didn't have any of that. We'd love to hear any ideas you might have about making the tool better as well as any suggestions for slide questions. So far, here are some questions we're interested in: 1) Tell us about art(ists) you like 2) What do you think about the art/music community in Toronto? 3) What do you think about this exhibit? 4) What's your favorite piece in this show? You can watch more clips on here.

Image We at Whippersnapper gallery are so computer savvy, so chip conscious and full of bit bravado that we have secured the domain names "Whippersnappergallery.com" and "Whippersnappergallery.org" so now when you are telling people to visit our amazing site that has new and improved functions and assets you don't have to be ashamed of our inferior ".ca" status any more. You can throw ".com" and ".org" around like a basketball player does money when he's at a club after a home game. I'm so I.T. cool that the tron guy wants me to share his bachelor pad with him. It would save a lot on rent for both of us but I'm not sure if I'm ready for the commitment.

getting better all the time
Tuesday, 19 February 2008
ImageFor those of you who haven’t heard, this past week was Reno Week at the gallery.
Gone: the back room curtain, the lack of back wall, and the old bar. Added: a lovely new back wall (with a door!), 2 new bars (on wheels!), and new white paint on the walls. And love. A whole new coat of love.

Also new this month: Antebellum, a group art show featuring regular WhipperSnapper artists Bogdan Luca, Amanda Nedham, and Adrian DiLena, as well as word artist JpKing, and print artist Ink Mind.
The show had its opening on Saturday, and will be up from Tuesday to Sunday, from 12- 6, ‘til February 29th.

Push It Opening
Friday, 18 January 2008
ImageOn January 9th 'Push It' opened at Whippersnapper as our 6th Group Exhibition. Showcasing the work of 25 young artists the opening was extremely well received with over 400 people in attendance throughout the night. After working diligently for weeks the efforts of our directors and volunteers were put to good use, and the show went off without a hitch. Push It received excellent press, and many works were purchased. Art in this show came from young Canadian artists from Manitoba, British Columbia, Quebec, Ontario and Nova Scotia.
Push it is going to be a tough show to top! Thank you to all the artists and those who helped to make it a success.
Please check out some of the good press.
